Way before the battles in Naboo, Jar Jar Binks was exiled from the underwater city of Otoh Gunga. His primary reason for exile was for being clumsy in front of the head of his clan.
As an outcast, Binks spent his time in the swamps, living off of raw shellfish. Jar Jar's life was forever changed when he came across two Jedi as they tried to evade enemy forces during the Trade Federation invasion.
Jar Jar later found himself indebted to Qui-Gon Jinn for saving his life and he led the Jedi to the city of Otoh Gunga. Despite the risk of torture, Jar Jar led the Jedi to Boss Nass to secure their transportation to Theed.
Later, Queen Amidala of Naboo requested that Jar Jar initiate contact with the Gungans. Because of Jar Jar's help, the Naboo and the Gungans joined forces and liberated the invaded world of Naboo. During the ground battle with the Trade Federation, Jar Jar was elevated to general in the Gungan Grand Army. Following the battle, Jar Jar was able to elevate in society and eventually put his past as an outcast behind him.
